Tips for writing a Media Release

  1. Make sure your "message" is newsworthy
  2. Unlike advertising copy, a Media Release is written to appeal to a journalist
  3. When writing a Media Release, consider the reporter's "newsworthy" needs. Answer the question, "Why would the listeners or readers care"?
  4. Ensure the headline connects with the reader. What is it about your news that is "newsworthy"
  5. Start with a brief description of the news, before announcing the name of your organisation
  6. Ask yourself, "How are people going to relate to this and will they be able to connect?"
  7. Including a quote from a key person can sometimes be advantageous
  8. Your Media Release should be approximately 400 - 500 words maximum, approx. one A4 page
  9. Keep the paragraphs short, and use 12pt type
  10. Avoid excessive use of adjectives and jargon and deal with the facts!

What must be included in your Media Release

  1. Mark your release "Media Release"
  2. Date your release
  3. Add a short headline to explain what your release is all about
  4. Put at the top either "For Immediate Use" or if it's embargoed, "Embargoed Until (include date)", then make sure your contact person is available at that date
  5. Content of the actual Media Release
