Tips for writing a Media Release
- Make sure your "message" is newsworthy
- Unlike advertising copy, a Media Release is written to appeal
to a journalist
- When writing a Media Release, consider the
reporter's "newsworthy" needs. Answer
the question, "Why would the listeners
or readers care"?
- Ensure the headline connects with the reader.
What is it about your news that is "newsworthy"
- Start with a brief description of the news, before announcing
the name of your organisation
- Ask yourself, "How are people going to relate to this and
will they be able to connect?"
- Including a quote from a key person can sometimes be advantageous
- Your Media Release should be approximately 400 - 500 words
maximum, approx. one A4 page
- Keep the paragraphs short, and use 12pt type
- Avoid excessive use of adjectives and jargon and deal with the
facts!
What must be included
in your Media Release
- Mark your release "Media Release"
- Date your release
- Add a short headline to explain what your release is all about
- Put at the top either "For Immediate Use" or if
it's embargoed, "Embargoed Until (include date)",
then make sure your contact person is available at that date
- Content of the actual Media Release
- Add contact information: Name of the person submitting the release,
organisation name, phone, fax, email, address, and website.
